We were housed in Tent City, an area of Camp Bastion formed by a mass of tents. Each of the tents had an entrance porch like these on the left to stop the sand from blowing into the corridor, with black plastic honeycombed track running between them.
The track was to keep the path from being blown away by a sandstorm, or from becoming a quagmire when it rained, and were lit at night to prevent injuries. Our track, however, ended after 50 metres. The rest of the route to the Ops tent was up and down drainage ditches in the pitch black - head torches were needed to get there in one piece.
